Engaging people in retrofit, Retrofit technical considerations

Engaging residents on ventilation | RISE Masterclass

In this masterclass, we bring together two critical elements of successful retrofit delivery related programmes: getting the technical approach to insulation and ventilation right, and placing residents at the heart of delivery.

Delivering insulation measures without a clear ventilation strategy — or without meaningful engagement with residents — can lead to poor outcomes, unintended consequences, and escalations around quality, health, and satisfaction. Drawing on PAS 2035 requirements, case studies, and lessons learned from previous funding rounds, this session explores how grant recipients can plan and deliver retrofit programmes that are both technically robust and people‑centred.

The session will cover the fundamentals of common insulation and ventilation measures used in social housing retrofit, explain why “build tight, ventilate right” is essential, and show how resident engagement supports access, uptake, wellbeing, and long‑term performance of installed measures. Attendees will also explore practical ways to design engagement activities that reduce refusals, build trust, and support compliance throughout the retrofit journey.

This masterclass is designed to support asset teams, project managers and delivery partners who want to improve quality, reduce risk, and strengthen relationships with residents while meeting scheme and PAS requirements.
