Engaging people in retrofit

Making retrofit make sense for residents | RISE Masterclass

In this masterclass, we explore how to help residents make sense of retrofit – not only to secure consent for works, but to support long‑term behaviour change once measures are installed.

Gaining agreement is only the first step. Retrofit success also depends on residents’ understanding what’s being installed, why it matters, and how to use new systems confidently in their everyday lives. This session focuses on influencing decisions before works begin, while laying the foundations for positive post‑installation behaviours.

Attendees will learn how to address common concerns, frame retrofit benefits in ways that resonate with residents, and communicate clearly about how measures will affect comfort, costs, and daily routines – helping to reduce refusals, build trust, and improve outcomes after installation.

  • Why residents say no – Understanding concerns, mistrust, perceived risk, and fear of change
  • Making retrofit meaningful – Framing benefits in ways that relate to comfort, control, costs, and everyday life
  • From acceptance to use – How early communication shapes resident behaviour after installation
  • Practical engagement techniques – Timing, messengers, language, visuals, and materials that support understanding and confidence
  • Managing refusals and building long‑term trust – Reducing resistance while setting residents up to use measures effectively
