Retrofit success stories
Draw inspiration from a whole range of retrofit success stories. From transforming social housing in Gloucestershire and heritage homes in Redditch to creating new jobs and greener homes in Manchester, there are so many examples of retrofit done well right across the country.

Building positive resident engagement for retrofit success in Nottinghamshire
119 Nottinghamshire is a pioneering energy efficiency project under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) Demonstrator Fund – now replaced by Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund.
Led by Nottinghamshire Local Authority, in partnership with Bassetlaw and Mansfield District Councils, the project was awarded £750,000 in funding.

Creating new jobs and greener homes in Manchester
Manchester City Council, in partnership with One Manchester, is leading a £3.1 million initiative to retrofit 164 homes, creating a more energy-efficient and sustainable neighbourhood.
The project is replacing gas and oil heating systems with air source heat pumps, installing external wall insulation, and upgrading windows to help keep residents warm and reduce carbon emissions.

How retrofit is transforming social housing in Gloucestershire
As part of a Gloucestershire-wide initiative, 46 homes owned by Stroud District Council, Cheltenham Borough Homes, and Two Rivers Housing underwent full retrofits to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Funded through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF), the project targeted homes with an EPC rating of D or below, introducing measures such as external wall insulation, air and ground source heat pumps, loft insulation, solar photovoltaics, battery storage, upgraded windows and doors, and remote monitoring equipment.

Retrofitting heritage homes – A consortia led approach in a conservation area
Lynn, aged 69, lives alone as a widowed housewife in a 3-bedroom social home in the Redditch area, where she has lived for the past 36 years. Her home has a 1960’s extension and like her neighbours, experienced drafts in the kitchen through the doors and windows. To stay comfortable, Lynn had to keep her heating on all the time.
Lynn’s home was selected to be part of a retrofitting project led by Orbit Housing Association, in partnership with Stratford-on-Avon District Council.
