British Standard 40101 – Building Performance Evaluation of Occupied and Operational Buildings

Introduction

British Standard 40101 (BS 40101) is one of several British Standards that support quality and good practice in construction and retrofit. It focuses on using robust building performance evaluation (BPE) methodologies to measure and monitor the overall performance (including energy for space heating, indoor air quality, moisture handling qualities etc.) of occupied and operational buildings.

Published: 5 December 2025

When published in 2022, BS 40101 was designed to provide a consistent approach to the performance evaluation of all types and ages of buildings, whatever the reason for the evaluation. In domestic retrofit, BS 40101 provides a framework for carrying out the performance monitoring and evaluation requirements of PAS 2035, providing greater insight into the actual improvement in energy performance (and related parameters) of a building.

BS 40101 can be used alongside PAS 2035, to provide an enhanced approach to gathering data from monitoring and evaluation activities. This means that performance evaluation data from these assessments could be stored in the TrustMark data warehouse for future reference, as well as for aggregated analysis and knowledge generation.
