Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards

Introduction

The government has introduced minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) that buildings must reach by a specific date in order to help the UK reduce its carbon emissions. For domestic properties, MEES is measured through an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). Depending on their tenure, different homes must reach different EPC levels at different dates. This quick guide focuses on the requirements for landlords letting property in the private rented sector.

This quick guide explains MEES and EPC levels and their meaning for landlords in a straightforward way. It should be useful to anyone working to make private rented homes more energy efficient, especially where this is driven by complying with national standards. As well as explaining the steps that landlords are required to take to comply with MEES, it sets out the exemptions and mechanisms in place to enforce the standards. The quick guide also introduces the broader impact of MEES, which can be seen to benefit landlords and tenants alike.
